Door het vergrendelingsmechanisme en de verbinding door middel van kettingen, ringen en draaikoppelingen is het theoretisch mogelijk om de gordels zelf te openen. Vanwege het schroefmechanisme is het noodzakelijk dat de persoon die in bedwang wordt gehouden lenig genoeg is om hem te bereiken en ook voldoende geduld heeft. Dit feit is te wijten aan de tijd die het kost om de sleutel om te draaien en het dwarsstuk los te maken. Vanwege deze kenmerken moet ook worden gelet op de richting van de sleutelgaten. Als je jezelf wilt bevrijden, moeten ze naar binnen wijzen. Dat is vooral belangrijk met betrekking tot de handsteunen. Zichzelf bevrijden is aanzienlijk gemakkelijker en daarom is het gebruik veiliger – als het nodig is. De sleutels moeten in ieder geval binnen handbereik zijn. Want ondanks de mogelijkheid om naar voorwerpen te grijpen en te lopen, is de bewegingsvrijheid natuurlijk enorm beperkt. Het gebruik van trappen kan bijna onmogelijk zijn. Als alternatief is het raadzaam om een helper respectievelijk een tweede persoon op een direct bereikbare afstand aanwezig te hebben wanneer de fixatiecombinatie wordt aangetrokken.
